Muay Thai is the national sport of Thailand and is followed by many Thais across the country. For martial arts enthusiasts, national Muay Thai day, 17 March, is a week-long festival attracting fighters from all over the world. The event is held in Ayutthaya, the home of Muay Thai, only a couple of hours drive from Bangkok. Also known as The Wai Kru Festival, it is an opportunity for practitioners to share their passion and pay respect to past masters. Apart from watching the world class fights, there are plenty of things to do. Stalls selling delicious Thai street food, chances for novices to learn fighting skills and for tattoo enthusiasts to get inked with a traditional Thai tattoo.
