Panti Salam Children’s Home was founded in 1979 as a response to the need for an orphanage in the Tabanan district of Bali. The foundation’s vision is to equip and empower economically disadvantaged children physically, emotionally and spiritually for adulthood. The home provides shelter to more than 50 kids who live on site and attend various primary and secondary schools in the area. They are not always orphans, but come because there is no alternative for schooling. The boys and girls are accepted based on their families’ economic situations; many come from impoverished families, or are victims of violence or exploitation. Some have only one parent who, in desperation, sends their young child into the labour force to help put food on the table. Others have no family at all and find themselves abandoned, alone in the world and at the mercy of strangers. These are intelligent, capable children who, by mere accident of birth, lack life’s most fundamental opportunities. By enabling them to have a formal education, complemented by a variety of projects and activities, Panti Salam empowers Bali’s otherwise overlooked children, giving them a chance to have the kind of life that most people around the world take for granted.
InterContinental Bali Resort’s 2016 Christmas fundraising initiative was a joint hotel-guest activity in which hotel guests, visitors and staff were invited to contribute a minimum US$10 cash donation and take home a Christmas pouch as a memento of their support for the underprivileged children of Bali. The pouches, which were handmade by the children of Widhya Asih orphanage house, were displayed throughout the festive season next to Santa’s Corner at InterContinental Bali Resort. The children also made Christmas Stockings, which were purchased by the Resort and then placed in each of the rooms on Christmas Eve as a unique turn-down amenity. Guests had the opportunity to see the children from Panti Salam when the youngsters sang carols in the Lobby on Christmas Eve. The amount of cash raised was matched by InterContinental Bali Resort, and a total donation of IDR 31,150,100 was presented to Panti Salam on Friday, 20th January 2017, at the orphanage house.
“Our ongoing commitment to raise funds for the foundation and interact with the children of the orphanage will help open doors to a better world for them in the future”, said Michel Chertouh, Regional General Manager for Bali Resorts, IHG.
