ELIE and the Elephant Valley Project
Elephant Livelihood Initiative Environment (ELIE) is a registered local non-government organization based in Mondulkiri, Cambodia. ELIE’s aim is to improve the health and welfare of the captive elephants in Mondulkiri Province, to work with the local people and the problems that face both people and elephant. The Elephant Valley Project (EVP) is an ecotourism project of ELIE that invites visitors to come and experience these wonderful creatures living in their natural habitat, while providing an alternative approach to elephant care, rehabilitation and conservation and providing employment for the local people.
In addition to the main program at Elephant Valley Project, ELIE runs a number of other programs to help both the captive and wild populations of elephants and the local Bunong communities who work with these elephants. These include a Veterinarian Program, Elephant Research and Monitoring Program, Community Health Cover Program, Indigenous Community Based Association and Land Rights Project and Wild Elephant & Forest Protection Ranger Program.
Options for visiting the Elephant Valley Project
We have a number of options to visit the Elephant Valley Project. One of the most rewarding is to visit as a volunteer. Long term volunteering often starts at a week and can last….well as long as you want. However we find that people are often quite busy with careers, family etc and so a month or so is quite normal.
The experience is all inclusive and we like to try and tailor peoples stays to their skill sets so that the volunteer and the project gets the most out of their stay. If you at all interested in spending your hard earned vacation time here with us in the valley, then please look up the volunteering programs we run with our partner Globalteer and come out to visit.
However if you are short on time we also have the below options:
Day Visit – Full day elephants
Spend a full day with the elephants. Learn about the elephants, the local mahouts and the forest. – $60 per person – including return transport from Sen Monorom and lunch
Day Visit – ½ day ele’s + ½ day volunteering
Half day with one family of elephants in the morning and half day volunteering work on the project in the afternoon – $30 per person – including return transport from Sen Monorom and lunch
++ Add An Overnight Stay
Backpacker Bungalow – Sleep in our beautiful new backpacker bungalow in a dorm style room – $15 per person – including dinner and breakfast
Private Bungalow – Stay in a self contained beautiful bungalow. Note: this option is highly dependant on availability as we only have four bungalows and they are firstly reserved for our long-term volunteers. – $25 per person – including dinner and breakfast
Please note the project is open from Sunday afternoon, when we bring volunteers to the project. You can then visit the elephants and volunteer Mon-Fri, and we all head back into town on Friday evening as the project is closed over the weekend.
