CHATTOGRAM, Bangladesh – On Friday, the runner from Patuakhali crossed the finish line with his arms raised in Patenga beach. He had no idea that his life had likewise come to an end.

Jamil dropped to the ground moments after finishing the marathon, and the organizers raced to his rescue. But by the time he arrived at the hospital, it was too late, and the 45-year-old was declared dead.
