YANGON, Myanmar – Myanmar’s generals have pardoned over 9,000 prisoners, including 114 foreign nationals, to commemorate the country’s Independence Day.

Friends and families of prisoners gathered outside the high-security Insein Prison in Yangon, the commercial capital, as the releases were scheduled to begin on Thursday and last several days.
