NEW DELHI, India: Google is seeking to lower the cost of smartphones in India by investing up to $1 billion in a major Indian telecom company.

Google has announced that it would invest $700 million in Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator in India, and acquire a 1.28 percent stake in the company.
