HANOI, Vietnam: Vietnam’s National Assembly has elected military general Luong Cuong as the country’s new president, marking the fourth individual to hold the largely ceremonial role in the past 18 months.

The 67-year-old general replaces To Lam, who continues to serve as the general secretary of the ruling Communist Party, the most powerful position in the country.
