The Writers Unlimited tour 2011 was a big success. Writers Abeer Soliman (Egypt), Maaza Mengiste (Ethiopia/USA), Gündüz Vassaf (Turkey) and Rodaan Al Galidi (Netherlands/Iraq) traveled for Writers Unlimited (The Hague) to Kuala Lumpur and Makassar to perform together with local writers. Organised in co-production with Bernice Chauly (Kuala Lumpur) and Rumata Art Space (Makassar). In the video below the writers comment on their experiences in Indonesia and Malaysia:
Dutch/Iraqi writer Rodaan Al Galidi (third in the video) says: “I have never experienced performances like the ones in Malaysia and Indonesia. Normally I go someplace else to read my poems, but here I saw in peoples’ looks, the people, the ocean, the moon, the horizon…all those smiling faces…we visited the poorest villages where perhaps I met the poorest people I have ever seen during my life, but we laughed so much with our poetry. It truly is a miracle. I hope everybody came to learn to be a writer, not to prove anyting. It was incredible.”
