The list of all time favourite thirst quenchers in Malaysia are just endless. With 365 days of sun and humidity, everything from Nescafe, the ais (milk tea), fresh fruit juice, carbonated drinks are usually served on ice. However, there is one all time favourite drink that any home in Malaysia has to have, chilled in a bottle ready to serve on a hot sunny day. This drink is equivalent to your cool aid or ice tea in summer. The Air Sirap Ros or Rose Syrup Drink is a popular drink amongst both children and adults alike.

When you go to a stall, apart from plain water, the next cheapest drink to order will be air sirap. You can’t go wrong with this drink when you place an order. It goes well with everything. If you order a plate of nasi lemak, chicken rice, satay, economic rice, char kuey teow, char siew, bak kut teh, sup kambing… the best addition to your meal will be air sirap.

The name Sirap Rose is taken from the red colouring ingredient of the drink. This red rose coloured drink is basically a blend of just plain red syrup made from three main components, sugar, 3 drops of red colouring and water. You can say that it is almost similar to grenadine syrup, however, it is a sweeter version of the former. This thirst quencher is as versatile as its pairing with your meals, as you can either have it on ice, or you can squeeze into this 1 fresh lime to the mix to get a little citrusy touch to the sip. Adding oranges and its juice turns this baby into a punch drink. Maybe a bit of lychee juice or fruit makes a great mix up. For Halloween, you can add in jelly into this drink to make it look like worms in a punch bowl.

The recipe I have here has been in my family for generations. The syrup can be store into a bottle and stored for a month long. It’s a great gift for family and friends when preparing a gift basket. This recipe makes up about 1.5 litters of syrup. For a glass, all you need is up to 2 tablespoons per serving.

Preparation & Cooking time: 10 minutes
Storage: 1 month in fridge.

How to make Sirap Rose

Ingredients for the Syrup:

1 kg sugar

1 liter of water

1 cinnamon stick

1 – 2 pandan leaf

½  tbsp of rose colouring


  1. Put all the ingredients into a pot and let the sugar dissolve. Leave to boiling point.
  2. Turn of the heat and let it cool.
  3. Once cooled, take about 2 – 3 tbsp of the concentrate to 1 tall glass of water and top off with ice.

Tip: Make a batch and chill it in the fridge. Great to drink straight from the fridge!
