Like any other cosmopolitan city, Singapore is brimming in its own broth of culture. In the last 5 years, art and music have burgeoned like nothing else, and despite – perhaps as a result, in spite – of restrictions in the tiny city-state, there now exists a solid albeit tiny underground independent creative circuit which deserves every mention.
Not immediately obvious to the casual onlooker, the DIY (short for “Do-It-Yourself”, which is every bit independent from mainstream corporate culture) music industry is thriving, if you know where to look. Latitudes introduces you to 5 of the most talked-about and talented independent bands and musicians one should be paying attention to right now.

You can’t say Bali nightlife without thinking about the Bali Bomb that devastated the area on 12 October 2002 and took the lifes of more than 200 people. Since then, the Ground Zero monument stands tall in the center of all the action. The area has been rebuild and once again young people flock to the nightclubs to celebrate Life on Bali.
The main buzz centers around Jalan Legian, near the backpackers area, but there are plenty more special places to discover. Here are some recommended night clubs around Kuta that are worth trying.

Put together an authoritarian government, repressed people, a highly competitive, capitalistic system, lots of money and what do you get? Oddly enough, a vibrant and exciting nightlife, as is the case in Singapore.
On any given night in Singapore, the streets of Clarke Quay, an area that begins from the financial district (Boat Quay) and lands somewhere in ghetto housing (Robertson Quay), are filled with people indulging in booze. For a first time visitor to the city, this would be a good bet for a good time. The efficient public transport makes getting there simple and the combination of yuppies sipping wine in upscale bars and poor students drinking out of bottles on the bridges is quite pleasant for the contrast connoisseur.

The Singapore Sling, is one of those cocktails everybody has heard of, but few have actually tried. The unique recipe was invented around 1915 by Long Bar Raffles Hotel barman Mr NgiamTong Boon. He tried to appease the well off colonial ladies with a frothy pink drink. The foamy top is a trademark, in the original recipe caused by fresh sarawak pineapple juice. These days, people often use bottled juice and add soda water to create a foamy top.
The taste is smooth and light, even though this cocktail packs a punch (it contains the equivalent of half a bottle of wine in alcohol, so don't be deceived by its innocent looks). Come on, the sun is out, mix up some Singapore Slings and kick back!
