This event, celebrated in China and by Chinese communities overseas, is also known as the Patriotic Poet’s festival and is mostly celebrated by Chinese who live in the coastal areas. This day the Chinese community commemorates the statesman Qu Yan who drowned himself. Reason was to protest against the government and its ongoing corruption. To prevent the fish from eating the body, people threw rice to feed them. The Dragon Boat Festival is a symbol for the day that fisherman rushed out with their boats to save Qu Yan.
